Social Studies 8 - Geography Unit Project

For this project, you will be researching one of the world's famous places. In your project, you will incorporate each of the five themes of geography: location, place, human-environment interaction, regions, and movement.
2. Your project must include the following information:LOCATION:
  • Give a relative location for your place (ex: the Eiffel Tower is located in Paris, France)
  • Give the absolute location (latitude and longitude) for your place (ex: 49º N, 120º.W)

  • A description of your famous place (Why is is famous?)
  • Give some physical characteristics of the country/area in which your famous place is found:
> Climate (tropical, temperate, etc.)> Land forms (volcanoes, valleys, deserts, etc.)> Indigenous plants and animals> Others
  • Give some human characteristics of the country/area in which your famous place is found:
> Language> Clothing> Customs (traditions, festivals, etc.)> Architectural styles> Government> Others
Make sure that you answer the following research questions in your presentation!
  • How does the surrounding environment where your place is located affect the people? (ex.: climate affecting which foods can be produced and which housing styles exist; resources affecting clothing styles)
  • How do people positively and negatively affect the surrounding environment where your place is located? (ex.: damming water sources, preserving habitat of endangered animals)
  • Is the country/area in which your famous place is located part of a particular geographic region? (ex.: language, government, religion, developing country, etc.)
  • Is the country/area in which your famous place is located part of a particular cultural region? (ex.: language, government, religion, developing country, etc.)

  • How are people, products, and information moved in the country/area in which your famous place is located? (ex.: people and products = train, car, on foot: Ideas= television, internet)
2. Your project must also include the following components:
  • A large, good quality drawing or photo of your famous place
  • A world map with the location of your famous place marked on it

3. How you choose to display the learning about your famous place is up to you. Some choices are:Powerpoint poster written report oral presentation with visual guide
4. Check your rubric for evaluation details.Choose your topic from one of the places listed below. Begin by checking one of the following sites for general information on your topic:
